Frequently Asked Questions

What is a home evaluation?

A home evaluation is the first step towards improving the accessibility and safety of your home. The occupational therapist meets you in your home, asks you about your needs and goals, and performs a comprehensive evaluation with a focus on your specified goals.

Change In Motion evaluations are typically 2-4 hours long.

Who can benefit from a home  evaluation?

Everyone!

A home evaluation is the first step in improving the accessibility and visitability of any home. Home evaluations help:

  • Homeowners interested in improving the visitability and market value of a home

  • People who want to improve their home safety and plan ahead for aging in place

  • People who have current unmet accessibility needs (e.g. wheelchair users in houses with stairs leading to every entrance, people with low vision living in homes with poor lighting and contrast)

Can I improve my home's accessibility without compromising aesthetics?

There are many design options that enable homeowners to improve the accessibility and visitability of their home without compromising the style and beauty of their property.

Are home modifications always expensive?

The short answer: No.

The long answer: Home modifications range widely in price and complexity. In many cases, fall prevention modifications are free (re-arranging furniture) or inexpensive (purchasing high visibility tape and extra lighting). Some modifications are covered by insurance. The most complex and expensive modifications involve home renovations, landscaping, and expensive equipment such as elevators.
